Decision logs for small product choices

When people compare Claude and GPT, the weakest version of the discussion is a scoreboard. The useful version starts with the job shape.

A coding assistant that feels better in a long refactor may not be the better default for quick search-backed answers. A model that is cheap enough to run on every small task may beat a stronger model that the team only uses for special cases. A model with better prose may still be worse inside a toolchain if it misses file boundaries, formats patches poorly, or makes verification harder.

For actual work, I would split the comparison into five checks.

1. Long-context reliability: does it keep the goal, constraints, and prior edits straight after many turns?
2. Tool behavior: does it call the right tools, read enough context, and stop before inventing state?
3. Verification habit: does it naturally ask for tests, screenshots, API checks, or reproduction steps?
4. Cost and latency: can the team afford to use it on the boring 80 percent of tasks?
5. Hand-off quality: can another person read the output and continue without decoding the model's private logic?

The answer can be Claude for one lane, GPT for another, and a smaller local model for a third. The mistake is trying to choose a single winner before naming the work.

A practical rule: pick the model after writing the acceptance test for the task. If the task needs careful edits across files, judge by diff quality. If it needs synthesis, judge by source handling. If it needs customer-facing prose, judge by revision cost. The model comparison should be attached to the work, not to brand loyalty.
