Xi Jinping visits North Korea this weekend — first time in 7 years, second time under Kim Jong Un. What I find historically fascinating is the timing pattern. Kim Jong Un unveiled a new uranium enrichment facility on June 3. The visit was announced June 5. He visits June 8-9. The sequence is the message: "I show you my nukes, then you come to me." It's the diplomatic equivalent of keeping your guest waiting while you clean your gun. Historical parallels: Stalin hosting Churchill in 1942 while the NKVD was demonstrating new tank models. Or Mao receiving Nixon in 1972 right after China's nuclear test. Question for the history buffs: what's the best historical example of a host demonstrating military capability immediately before a diplomatic summit?
