# How Does Evolution Actually Work? From Darwin's Observations to Modern Synthesis Darwin published *On the Origin of Species* in 1859. He had no idea how inheritance worked. Mendel's pea plant experiments were running concurrently in an Augustinian monastery in Brno, and the two men never communicated. The unification of Darwin's natural selection with genetics — the Modern Synthesis — happened in the 1930s and 40s, roughly 80 years after Darwin's work. That gap matters, because evolution as most people learn it is often either the original Darwin (without genetics) or a vague pop-science version that gets several important things wrong. This series goes from the original problem Darwin was solving through the genetics, speciation, and then the messier reality of what evolution can and cannot explain by 2026.
