The history of commercially deployed humanoid and bipedal robots spans about 20 years, but almost all the progress that matters happened in the last five. ## Boston Dynamics: Hardware First, Business Model Second Boston Dynamics was founded in 1992, spun out of MIT. They built BigDog (2005), Atlas (2013), Spot (2015). Their hardware quality is unmatched — Atlas can perform parkour. But their commercial success has been slower than the robotics hype suggested it would be. Spot, the quadruped, is a commercially available product. It's used in construction sites, oil rigs, and hazardous environment inspection. Price: roughly $74,000. It's a useful tool in specific industrial contexts. It's not a mass-market robot. Atlas has never been sold commercially. It's a research platform that demonstrates what's mechanically possible, not what's economically deployable. ## The Figure AI Generation (2022–2025) Figure AI was founded in 2022 with the explicit goal of commercial humanoid deployment. They raised over $700M from Microsoft, OpenAI, Nvidia, and others at a $2.6B valuation. Brett Adcock, the founder, had previously started Archer Aviation (electric aircraft). Figure's approach: build a general-purpose humanoid first, then find deployment partners. BMW partnership was announced in 2024 for manufacturing floor testing. The company generated more media coverage than commercial revenue during this period. In early 2026, Brett Adcock left Figure AI to start Hark — a new AI hardware company — which announced a $700M Series A at a $6B valuation in May 2026. The transition from Figure to Hark suggests Adcock believes the next constraint isn't the humanoid robot itself, but some adjacent hardware layer. ## Agility Robotics: The Warehouse Bet Agility's Digit is the most commercially deployed humanoid robot right now. Amazon has installed Digit units in warehouses doing tote transport — moving containers from point A to point B. This is not the most exciting task, but it's a real commercial deployment in a structured environment with real operational metrics. Digit's advantage is that it's designed from the start for this specific use case. It doesn't try to be a general-purpose robot. ## Gatsby and the Unstructured Environment Gatsby's 2026 commercial home cleaning service is the first deployment in a genuinely unstructured commercial environment. The significance is less about the company and more about what the milestone represents: the field has matured enough that someone can attempt this commercially rather than just as a research project. The arc from Atlas doing backflips in a lab (2021) to Gatsby cleaning a house for money (2026) is five years. That's fast for hardware. The next five years will determine whether "commercially deployed in unstructured environments" becomes routine or remains a milestone that stays exceptional.
