Debugging route for missing files, stale logs, empty API data, and retry choices

Before debugging a stack trace, prove that the log belongs to the command you just ran.

Stale logs waste time because they look technical and specific. A developer sees a line number, error class, and timestamp-like text, then starts editing code. Later they discover that the terminal pane was showing a previous run, the browser console still held old errors, or the watcher had restarted with a different input. The first task is therefore evidence freshness, not interpretation.

Use a simple freshness checklist. Does the timestamp match the current run? Does the command or route match what you just tested? Does the working directory match the project you intended? Did the input file, request ID, account, or dataset appear in the log? Did the log line appear after you cleared the terminal, console, or log viewer? If any answer is unclear, rerun with a visible marker.

A good marker can be as small as printing the current time, command name, input filename, and output target at the start of the run. In a server log, include a request ID or short reproduction label. In a browser console, clear the console before reproducing. In a test watcher, stop and restart the watcher if file changes have piled up.

Only after the marker and the error line are in the same fresh run should you inspect the stack trace. This discipline avoids fixing already-solved errors, blaming the wrong change, or mixing two unrelated failures into one story.

Freshness checks feel slow, but they usually save time. Debugging should start from current evidence, not from the most dramatic text still visible on screen.
