Bug Report to Reproduction and Patch Flow

Patch-first safety criteria define when it is reasonable to apply a fix before building a full reproduction. The criteria matter because some failures are urgent and obvious, while others only appear obvious until the first patch makes the system harder to reason about.

The first criterion is evidence strength. Patch first is more defensible when logs, stack traces, config diffs, or monitoring point to a narrow cause. A missing environment variable, expired certificate path, typo in a config key, broken feature flag, or failed dependency route may not require a long reproduction before mitigation. The patch should match the evidence directly.

The second criterion is reversibility. A small config rollback, feature flag change, dependency pin, or one-line guard is safer than a broad refactor. If the patch cannot be reversed quickly, the team should slow down and reproduce first. Irreversible or broad changes need more proof.

The third criterion is blast radius. Patch first is risky when the change touches shared behavior, permissions, billing, migrations, data writes, authentication, or public API contracts. Those areas need a verification case because a plausible patch can create a wider regression.

The fourth criterion is verification path. Even a patch-first mitigation should have a way to confirm whether the failure stopped for the right reason. If the team cannot define how to verify the fix, it is not ready to patch safely.

The practical rule is: patch first only when evidence is strong, the change is narrow, rollback is clear, blast radius is limited, and verification can happen immediately after.
