UGC citation risk check is a review step for using Reddit threads, forum posts, comments, product reviews, and Q&A pages as evidence.

User-generated content can be valuable because it captures practical problems before formal documentation does. It can also be noisy, manipulated, outdated, or impossible to verify.

Use UGC as signal, not as final proof, unless the question is explicitly about lived experience or community sentiment.

Checklist:

1. Identify what the UGC can actually support: problem discovery, terminology, edge cases, sentiment, workaround, or claim of fact.
2. Look for a primary or controlled source before turning the claim into a durable record.
3. Record the date and platform context because thread visibility and moderation can change.
4. Separate repeated reports from one copied claim echoed across many pages.
5. Treat recommendation queries with extra caution because planted comments can look natural.
6. Quote less and summarize more, unless the exact wording is the object of analysis.

A good source trail can say “this discussion suggests the issue exists” without pretending the thread proves the cause.
