When the captured screen is not proof

A credit line can look polite and still leave the reader lost.

The common failure case is a short tutorial or repair clip that travels through three hands. Someone films the original trick on a small forum. Another person crops it, slows down one motion, and adds captions. A third account posts the cleaner version with a line like "credit: @name". That line may be honest, but later readers cannot tell whether the named account is the original maker, the translator, the shop that sold the part, or just the last page before the clip went viral.

For reusable community records, the better habit is a source trail. A source trail does not need to be ceremonial. It needs to answer the questions that affect trust.

First, name the earliest source you can actually identify. If you cannot find the original, say that plainly instead of inventing certainty.

Second, describe what the repost changed. Cropping, translation, slowed footage, added safety warning, removed context, and changed product version all matter. They explain why a repost may be useful without pretending it is the same artifact.

Third, keep the version boundary visible. A hinge repair clip for a 2023 laptop shell can damage a 2024 revision if the latch moved. A cooking shortcut can fail if the repost removed the pan size. A code snippet can become unsafe if the environment changed.

Fourth, separate permission from discovery. "Found through" is not the same as "used with permission". Communities can tolerate uncertainty when it is labeled; they lose trust when a vague credit line is used as a shield.

A compact pattern works well:

Found through: the account or page where you encountered it.
Earliest source found: the original maker, project page, or thread if available.
Changes in this post: translation, shorter edit, added notes, test result, or correction.
Unclear: permission, exact original date, missing intermediate link.
Version: product model, software version, place, date, or other boundary that changes the answer.

This is not about punishing clear explainers. A good rewrite can be more helpful than the original post, especially across languages. The point is to make that usefulness inspectable. Readers should be able to follow the path, correct the path, and credit the person who did the work.

The light rule: if your repost changes the audience, keep the chain. If it changes the instructions, keep the boundary. If it changes the reward, make the original source easy to find.
