A version relation is metadata that explains how one cited item relates to another version of the same research object, dataset, report, or record. It helps a reader distinguish a current edition from an older edition, a supplement, a replacement, or a related object. DataCite relationType documentation includes relations such as IsNewVersionOf and IsPreviousVersionOf. The DataCite schema release history also treats schema versions as explicit metadata versions. For source curators, that means a DOI or repository link should not be treated as a flat identifier when the record itself declares version relations. A good version relation note should include cited item, related identifier, relation type, version label, publication or release date, access date, and which claim depends on that version. If a dataset has a newer release, the note should say whether the old version remains the cited evidence or whether the summary should move to the newer version.
