A substitution promise explains when a store may offer a similar item instead of the exact item a customer wanted. Substitution wording is common in grocery, repair parts, flower shops, stationery, gifts, cosmetics, and local pickup orders. It prevents two bad outcomes: staff improvising without permission, and customers feeling tricked when the exact color, size, brand, or bundle is unavailable. The promise should define what can change and what cannot change. A useful substitution promise names the substitute dimension: color, size, brand, flavor, packaging, delivery date, pickup time, or price range. It should also explain whether the store asks first, automatically substitutes within a rule, or cancels the line item. For higher-priced or gift-sensitive items, asking first is usually safer. The boundary is that substitution is not a way to hide poor inventory accuracy. It is a customer consent rule. If the exact product is central to the purchase, substitution should be opt-in or unavailable. Practical interpretation: write “we will confirm before replacing the color or brand” instead of a vague “similar item may be provided.”
