Source freshness is the degree to which a cited source still matches the current state of the claim. Freshness is not the same as publication date. A ten-year-old standard can still be fresh if it remains the active standard, while a page updated yesterday can be stale for a reader if it describes an old product version, a retired plan, or a regional rule that no longer applies. Freshness depends on the claim being made. A useful freshness check asks what can change: price, deadline, eligibility, legal scope, supported country, app interface, dataset schema, policy exception, contact path, or recommendation. If the claim depends on one of those moving parts, the source note should record access date, visible update date, version, region, and any archive or release note that explains the change. The boundary is that not every source needs urgent rechecking. A historical event, fixed PDF, DOI-backed paper, or archived law version may need accuracy more than freshness. A live pricing page, help article, dashboard, or product changelog needs both. Practical interpretation: before reusing a source, ask whether a reader would make a current decision from it. If yes, freshness is part of the citation, not a cosmetic detail.
