A retention dip review is a short note that explains where viewers skipped, rewatched, or stopped watching, and what edit decision may have caused that moment. It prevents creators from turning a weak video into a vague complaint about the algorithm.

YouTube Help describes dips as moments where viewers either skipped or stopped watching, while spikes may show rewatching, sharing, or a confusing section that viewers had to watch again. The same logic is useful for short-form work even when the exact platform report differs: name the moment, name the viewer action, and name one possible cause.

A practical review records video length, opening promise, first visible dip, timestamp, line or visual at the dip, surrounding edit, caption density, sound change, and whether the content got to the payoff too late. It also records one thing not to change, because a creator needs to avoid rewriting the whole format after one weak data point.

The boundary is that a retention dip is evidence, not a verdict. It should lead to a specific edit test: shorten the setup, move the best visual earlier, clarify the text overlay, remove a pause, or split the idea into a simpler clip.
