A retention cliff is a sudden drop in viewer retention at a specific moment of a short video. The drop usually points to a mismatch between expectation and payoff. It can happen when the intro repeats the title, the first visual is too slow, captions cover the important action, the edit pauses without reason, the promised answer is delayed, or the video shifts from one topic to another. A cliff is more useful than a simple average retention number because it shows where the viewer made a decision. Creators can review the timestamp before the drop, the frame at the drop, and the next two seconds after it. The question is not only “is this boring?” It is “what did the viewer think would happen, and what happened instead?” The boundary is that not every drop is a failure. Some viewers leave after getting the answer. Practical interpretation: a cliff near the payoff can be normal, but a cliff before the promise is clear usually means the opening, pacing, or visual evidence needs work.
