A recovery surface is the part of a product that tells a user how access can be restored after the normal sign-in path fails. It is not only a support page. It can be a setup screen, a settings checklist, a backup-code prompt, a device list, a password-manager label, an email notice, or a help article linked at the moment a risky setting changes. A good recovery surface answers four questions: 1. What currently proves this user can return? 2. Which device, account, key, code, or support process is the backup? 3. What changes when the primary device is lost, sold, reset, or shared? 4. What should be checked again after a device replacement or account migration? The term is useful for passkeys, two-factor authentication, family accounts, school portals, work devices, creator accounts, and any service where stronger login can accidentally make recovery harder to understand. A recovery surface should be short, visible, and testable. If it only appears after lockout, it is support material, not a working recovery surface.
