A protected day is a day that remains inside a streak because a freeze, grace period, late check-in, or catch-up rule protected the chain. It is not the same as a completed practice day. The term is useful when a product wants to keep motivation without hiding a missed day. A protected day says: the habit was interrupted, the app allowed the user to continue, and the history should still show that difference. Typical fields: - original date: the calendar day that was missed - protection type: freeze, grace period, late check-in, manual recovery, or catch-up task - completion state: no work, partial work, later make-up work, or verified completion - user-visible label: a small mark that explains the day without shaming the user A protected day should not be used to fake precision. If a fitness or therapy log needs actual compliance data, the protected day must stay separate from completed work. If the streak is mostly a motivation feature, the mark can be quiet, but it should still exist somewhere in the history. The simple test: can the user later tell whether the habit happened that day, or whether the streak was only kept alive? If the answer is no, the product is mixing encouragement with evidence.
