Key card ownership describes a product where a physical object authorizes access to a downloaded game, app, or media file, but does not contain the full playable content itself. It is not the same as a traditional cartridge or disc, because the first install depends on a download. It is also not the same as a one-time account code, because the physical key may still be borrowed, resold, rented, or moved between users when the platform permits it. ## Use This Label When - The box or card is needed to prove access. - The full software is not stored on the card. - First use requires internet, storage, or a platform download service. - Later play may work offline, but only after installation and usually with the card inserted. ## Why It Matters Key card ownership splits the old physical-media bundle into smaller pieces. The buyer may keep transferability and shelf presence, but lose first-use independence and long-term certainty. That affects gifts, travel, used sales, libraries, preservation, and homes with slow or limited internet. ## Checks A clear listing should answer these before checkout: - Is the full base game on the card? - How much storage is required? - Is internet required only once or repeatedly? - Does the card need to stay inserted? - Can the card be used on another console or by another buyer? If those answers are visible, the buyer can treat the product as its own category. If they are hidden, the product may look more physical than it really is.
