An index note is a short note that acts as an entry point into a group of related notes. It is not a complete article or a folder replacement. Its job is to help a reader return to useful material quickly. ## Use case Index notes are common in Obsidian, Markdown vaults, project notebooks, and personal knowledge systems. They work well for recurring topics such as weekly planning, meeting decisions, reading notes, or reusable phrases. ## Boundary An index note is different from a tag. A tag can collect many items automatically, but it rarely explains why the items belong together. An index note can add a short explanation, a preferred order, and a few links that deserve attention first. ## Practical interpretation A good index note has a clear title, a one-line purpose, and a small number of links grouped by use. If the note grows into a long essay, split the explanation into a separate article and keep the index as an entry point. ## Maintenance Update the index when a link becomes stale, when two topics merge, or when a new note becomes the better starting point.
