A hook promise is the expectation a short video creates in its first few seconds about what the viewer will get if they keep watching. The promise can be a result, a question, a contrast, a mistake, a reveal, or a practical payoff. In a cooking Short, the promise might be “one pan dinner without chopping.” In a coding clip, it might be “the bug was not in the function you are staring at.” In a travel clip, it might be “the cheaper station exit saves ten minutes.” A hook promise is different from a loud opening. Fast cuts, big captions, or a surprising face can get attention, but they do not automatically tell the viewer why to stay. The promise has to be specific enough that the viewer can predict the value of the next ten seconds. The boundary is that the promise must be paid off. If the opening says “three mistakes,” the video should clearly deliver three mistakes. If it promises a before-and-after, the after should appear soon enough to feel fair. A misleading hook may get a short spike but weakens comments, saves, and repeat trust. A practical review is to write the first line as a sentence: “Stay because you will learn X.” If X is vague, the hook is probably weak.
