Hook Promise is the expectation created by the first line, first frame, title, caption, or visual setup of a short video. A hook is not only a loud opening. It is a contract with the viewer about what will be resolved if they keep watching. Strong hook promises are specific enough to create direction but not so complete that the viewer has already received the answer. Weak hook promises are either too vague, too broad, or unrelated to the payoff. “Watch this” is not a promise. “The edit that made this recipe readable on a phone” is a promise because the viewer knows what to look for. The promise should match the video body. If the hook promises a mistake, the video should show the mistake and the fix. If it promises a list, the structure should count clearly. If it promises a before-after, the after should arrive before the viewer gives up. The practical use is a hook log. Write the promise, payoff second, retention drop, and whether comments mention the expected topic. Over time, the creator learns which promises attract the right audience, not just which lines sound dramatic.
