A handoff risk note is a short section that says what could go wrong after work moves from one person or team to another. Many handoffs describe the happy path but hide the risk. They list files, links, and next steps, yet do not say which decision is fragile, which customer is waiting, which dependency may slip, or which assumption is unverified. The receiver then has to infer urgency from scattered messages. A useful risk note has three parts: the risk, the trigger, and the fallback. The risk says what could break. The trigger says how the receiver will know it is happening. The fallback says what to do first. For example: “If the partner does not confirm by noon, use the draft email in section three and move launch copy review to tomorrow.” The boundary is that this note should not become a long anxiety list. It belongs only to risks that would change sequence, ownership, customer promise, legal review, cost, or delivery date. Practical interpretation: add the handoff risk note before the receiver asks, “What should I watch out for?”
