A handoff checklist is a compact transfer record for work that is moving from one person or team to another. It should make the next owner able to continue the work without guessing which files, access rights, risks, and deadlines matter. The minimum checklist has ownership, current state, links, access, known risks, open decisions, recurring tasks, deadlines, escalation contacts, and the next review date. Project closure templates often emphasize approvals and next steps; the same logic applies to smaller internal handoffs. The point is not to write a long report. The point is to remove hidden dependencies. A good handoff also says what is intentionally out of scope. If a receiving team thinks a task includes vendor negotiation, data cleanup, and customer communication, while the sending team only meant technical support, the checklist has failed. Scope boundaries belong next to the task list. The checklist should end with a confirmation line: who accepted the handoff, on what date, and which gaps remain. Without that line, the document may describe work but not prove transfer.
