A freshness marker is the small date or version note that tells a reader when a source was checked and which version of the source the summary depends on. It is different from a publication date. A government guidance page, technical recommendation, or product help page may be published once and updated many times. GOV.UK publishing guidance, for example, exposes update history and guidance changes; standards pages may keep errata sheets; legal sources may have corrigenda or revised versions. A summary without a freshness marker can make an old reading look current. A good freshness marker contains the source title, checked date, visible last-updated date if present, version or errata status if relevant, and the reason the date matters. The reason matters because not every old source is stale. A historical record may be intentionally old. A live eligibility rule, transport notice, API limit, or compliance checklist may need a current check. The boundary is that a freshness marker is not a guarantee that the source will remain current. It is a reading timestamp. It lets the next curator know whether to update the summary, archive the old version, or keep the note as a historical record.
