Free Plan Boundary is the line between letting a user prove product value and letting the product carry unlimited unpaid usage. A free plan is useful when it creates a real activation path. The user should be able to understand the core job, create a first useful output, and decide whether the tool fits the workflow. A free plan becomes weak when it hides the value behind the upgrade button, or when it gives away the whole recurring job so paid conversion depends only on goodwill. A useful boundary can be drawn around volume, history, collaboration, automation, export, branding, support, or advanced integrations. The right boundary depends on the job. A writing tool may keep core drafting free but gate team libraries or export history. A monitoring tool may allow one project but gate alerts and retention. A design tool may allow watermarked previews but gate production export. The boundary should match the moment when the user has evidence of value. The boundary should also protect trust. If the free plan promises too much and then blocks the obvious next step, the user reads it as bait. If the free plan is too generous, the founder may get usage without learning who would pay. The practical rule: the free plan should prove the product, not replace the product.
