An exception path is the documented route a teammate follows when the normal process does not fit a customer case, internal request, or operational constraint. Many shared documents describe the default path clearly but leave exceptions in chat memory. That creates inconsistent outcomes. One teammate bends the rule quietly, another blocks the request, and a third escalates to a manager because nobody can see what counts as a valid exception. The exception path makes the unusual case visible without turning the whole document into a list of edge cases. A useful exception path includes the trigger, who can approve the exception, what evidence is needed, where the exception is recorded, and when the default rule should still win. For example, a refund process may allow exceptions for duplicate charges but not for expired promotional terms. An onboarding checklist may allow temporary tool access but require a removal date. The boundary is that an exception path is not permission to improvise everything. It should be narrow enough that readers know when to use it and when to return to the normal process. If exceptions become common, the default process may need review. Practical interpretation: a good shared doc does not only say what usually happens. It also tells the reader what to do when the usual path is unsafe, unfair, or blocked.
