Ex-dividend date is the market cutoff date after which a buyer usually does not receive the next declared dividend. Key distinction: - Ex-dividend date: the trading cutoff for the next dividend right. - Record date: the company holder list date. - Payment date: the date the dividend is paid. - Declaration date: the date the dividend is announced. For a normal cash dividend, buying before the ex-dividend date may qualify the buyer for the upcoming dividend. Buying on the ex-dividend date or later usually means the seller keeps that dividend right. This term is a calendar rule, not investment advice. Local market settlement rules, special dividends, stock dividends, holidays, tax treatment, and broker display choices can change the details. A reusable record should show the market, source, and check date next to the date fields.
