Errata status is the review state attached to a reported mistake in a published technical document, specification, or standard. The status matters because an erratum is not the same as a silent edit. The RFC Editor keeps errata separate from the RFC text and distinguishes states such as reported, verified, held for document update, and rejected. W3C errata pages likewise separate known errors from the recommendation itself and classify changes so readers can see whether a correction is editorial or more substantial. A useful citation should therefore name the base document, the errata page, the errata identifier or date when available, and the status seen on the check date. If a note says only “the RFC says,” it can hide a verified correction that changes how implementers should read the sentence. If it says only “there is errata,” it may overstate a reported item that has not been accepted. The boundary is that errata status does not replace the original source. It tells the reader how to read the original source responsibly. A careful source trail keeps the original link and the errata link together.
