A diagnostic fee is a charge for inspecting a device, appliance, vehicle, or system to identify a fault. The fee may be separate from the repair price, credited toward the repair, waived after approval, or kept even if the customer declines the repair. Useful diagnostic-fee records state: - amount and currency - whether the fee is refundable - whether it is credited toward repair - what inspection is included - when the customer must approve additional work - whether the shop still charges if no fault is found The important boundary is timing. A customer should know the diagnostic-fee rule before the device is opened or checked in.
