A decision log entry is a durable record of what a team decided, why it decided that way, who owns the outcome, and when the decision should be revisited. It is different from a meeting note because it must survive outside the meeting where the decision happened. Atlassian’s Confluence decision materials describe structured decision pages and decision logs, while DACI framing separates driver, approver, contributors, and informed roles. The practical point is not the acronym itself. The point is that a future teammate should be able to see the decision, the alternatives considered, the reason for rejecting them, the approving role, the date, the expected effect, and the review trigger. A weak entry says “Use vendor A.” A useful entry says “Use vendor A for the pilot because it supports SSO and EU data residency by the launch date; vendor B was rejected because migration support starts too late; owner is Platform Ops; review after 60 days or if onboarding time exceeds two days.” Decision logs become especially important when teams rely on meeting recaps or chat threads. A transcript can show the conversation, but the decision log tells the next person which outcome is current and what condition would reopen it.
