Claim support is the match between a sentence and the source attached to it. A citation can exist without supporting the claim. The source may mention the same topic but not the same number, region, date, exception, or recommendation. This problem is common in summaries because a writer may attach a broad source to a precise sentence. Readers then see a link and assume the evidence is stronger than it is. A claim support check asks one plain question: if a skeptical reader opened the source, would they find the same claim with the same scope? If the answer is no, the sentence should be softened, narrowed, moved to a different source, or marked as interpretation rather than fact. The boundary is important. A source can support a background statement but not a conclusion. It can support a number but not the recommended action. It can support an old rule but not the current rule. It can support one country, product tier, or software version while the summary accidentally applies it everywhere. Practical interpretation: check claim support before reusing a quote, statistic, policy summary, product comparison, or AI-generated citation. The goal is not more links. The goal is fewer unsupported sentences that look well sourced at a glance.
