A citation boundary note states what a source supports and what it does not support. It is the small guardrail that keeps a useful source from becoming broader than its evidence. Crossref metadata best practices emphasize that richer metadata improves discoverability and connects content to the scholarly record, while Crossref reference documentation encourages registering references and explains that metadata can be updated. W3C Web Annotation describes a model for annotations that can be shared and reused without losing significant information. These references all point to the same practical need: source context should travel with the reused claim. A boundary note might say: “This source defines the metadata field, but does not compare search ranking impact.” Another might say: “This help page describes public account behavior, not enterprise exceptions.” The note should be attached near the claim, not buried in a bibliography. Boundary notes are especially useful when a source is authoritative but narrow. Official documentation can be correct and still not answer the question a reader wants to ask. The boundary note protects both the source and the reader.
