# Boot Context Boot context is the set of pre-login details that can change how a device starts, updates, recovers, or fails. It matters most when a problem appears before the user reaches the desktop: firmware screen, update rollback, blue screen, BitLocker recovery, boot loop, missing disk, or repair mode. A good boot-context note records: - device maker and model - CPU or platform generation - BIOS or UEFI version - Secure Boot state - disk layout and EFI System Partition condition when relevant - BitLocker or device-encryption status - exact update, driver, or firmware change - first visible failure point - rollback or recovery action that changed the result Boot context should not be confused with ordinary app environment details. Browser version, app version, and account state may explain a desktop bug, but they usually do not explain a recovery prompt before login. The main rule: if the failure happens before the desktop is available, preserve the boot context before reducing the issue to a single update name. Two devices can share the same KB number and still fail for different reasons because their firmware, encryption, partition state, or support status is different.
