Attention price is the non-cash cost a user pays when a product asks for time, focus, action, or exposure in exchange for a reward. It is useful because many product offers are not priced only in money. A quest, rewarded video, streak, survey, verification step, or sponsored task can be free in cash while still charging the user with time and attention. Good attention-price notes separate the offer from the cost: - offer: what the user receives - action: what the user must do - duration: how long the task usually takes - interruption: whether the task breaks the user's main workflow - eligibility: who can actually complete it - value: what the reward is worth inside or outside the product - recovery: what happens if the task completes but the reward is not delivered The term does not mean every rewarded task is bad. It means the cost should be visible before the user starts. A voluntary ad can be acceptable when the price is legible, the reward is stable, and the failure path is clear. A practical record template: 1. Name the reward. 2. Name the required action. 3. Estimate the time cost. 4. List eligibility and expiry rules. 5. State whether the reward can be claimed, refunded, transferred, or lost. 6. Add known failure cases and support routes. This concept is especially relevant for virtual currencies, creator-platform tasks, game passes, shopping rewards, and community apps that blend entertainment with advertising.
