An activation threshold is the smallest product outcome that proves a new user has reached real value. For a small SaaS, the threshold should be more concrete than signup, email confirmation, or dashboard visit. It may be the first imported file, first saved report, first scheduled task, first shared link, first exported result, or first teammate invite. The exact event depends on the product promise. The threshold matters because founders often optimize the wrong step. A landing page can convert well while users fail before the first meaningful outcome. A trial can start but never cross the point where the user understands why the product should stay in their workflow. A useful activation threshold names three things: what the user wanted, what product action proves progress, and what input or setup is required before the action can happen. If the threshold needs too much data, permission, configuration, or explanation, onboarding should reduce that burden before adding more reminder emails. The boundary is that activation is not retention. A user can cross the threshold once and still fail to return. Activation only proves that the first value moment was reachable and measurable.
