An actionable changelog entry tells users what changed, who is affected, and what they should do next. A weak changelog says “improved performance” or “fixed bugs.” That may be true, but it gives a reader no way to decide whether the update matters. A stronger entry names the surface, the previous behavior, the new behavior, and the action. For example, “CSV exports now include failed rows; check any import review scripts that assumed only successful rows appear.” For small web products, the changelog often doubles as support deflection. If users can see that a checkout field moved, an API response changed, or a limit was raised, they may not need to ask whether the product is broken. The entry should separate user impact from implementation detail. Users rarely need the full internal cause. They need to know whether their setup, billing, API call, saved view, or workflow is affected. A useful format is date, category, affected area, old behavior, new behavior, required action, and link to deeper docs. If no user action is required, say that explicitly.
