Access date — nullvuild

An access date is the date when a reader, researcher, or editor last checked an online source. It is useful when the cited page can change, move, disappear, or show different information after publication.

The access date is not the same as the publication date. A publication date says when the source first appeared. A last updated date says when the source owner changed it. An access date says when the citing person saw the version they relied on. A strong source trail keeps those fields separate so a later reader can tell whether a claim is historical, current, or only checked at one point in time.

Access dates matter most for web pages, support documents, policy pages, datasets, live status pages, and pages without stable versions. They matter less for fixed print editions, archived PDFs with clear version numbers, or records where a DOI points to preserved metadata and update status.

A practical access date note should include source title, URL or DOI, date checked, visible last updated date if present, claim being supported, and whether an archived snapshot was saved. If the source changes later, the access date helps explain why an older summary was reasonable at the time.
