An access date is the date when a reader or writer last checked a source. It is especially useful for web pages that can change without a clear publication date. ## Use case Access dates are common in citation notes, source trails, support documentation summaries, and corrections. They help a later reader understand when the cited wording was visible. ## Boundary An access date is not the same as a publication date or an update date. Publication date says when the source was released. Update date says when the publisher changed it. Access date says when the writer looked at it. A good citation can include all three when available. ## Practical interpretation For a changing help page, write: “Accessed June 22, 2026; no visible update date.” This gives future readers a timestamp without inventing source freshness. ## Maintenance Refresh the access date only when the source is actually rechecked. Do not silently update the date just to make a citation look newer.
