Understanding them doesn't make you immune, but it does give you a fighting chance. ## Why Your Brain Lies to You Evolution optimized the human brain for speed, not accuracy. In a world where hesitation meant death, fast heuristics ("that bush rustled, run") were more valuable than careful analysis. The problem: our modern environments punish these shortcuts in ways our ancestors never faced. Three categories define most cognitive biases: 1. **Information processing shortcuts** — How we filter overwhelming data 2. **Memory distortions** — What we store and how we reconstruct it 3. **Social/tribal influences** — How group dynamics warp perception ## The Big Four You're Most Likely to Fall For ### 1. Confirmation Bias You search for, interpret, and remember information that confirms your existing beliefs. When reading about your investment pick, you notice articles praising it and dismiss criticism as "biased." **How it manifests**: Googling "reasons why [belief] is correct" instead of testing the belief. Reading only news sources that align with your worldview. **Countermeasure**: Steel-man the opposing view. Force yourself to articulate the strongest possible version of the argument you disagree with before making a judgment. ### 2. Availability Heuristic You judge likelihood based on how easily an example comes to mind. After seeing plane crash news, you feel flying is dangerous — despite cars being statistically far more lethal per mile traveled. **How it manifests**: Overestimating rare dramatic risks (terrorism, plane crashes) while underestimating common mundane ones (poor diet, sedentary lifestyle). **Countermeasure**: Ask for base rates. "How common is this actually?" before relying on the vivid mental image. ### 3. Sunk Cost Fallacy You continue investing in a failing project because of what you've already spent. The business is losing money, but you've already put in three years, so you keep going. **How it manifests**: Staying in bad relationships, jobs, or investments because of past investment — not future prospects. **Countermeasure**: Ask "If I were starting fresh today with no prior commitment, would I choose this?" If no, the sunk cost is controlling you. ### 4. Dunning-Kruger Effect Incompetence prevents accurate self-assessment. Beginners lack the knowledge to recognize how much they don't know. You will discover patterns in your failures that you're systematically blind to. ## The Meta-Bias Problem Knowing about biases creates a new problem: the bias blind spot. People readily identify biases in others while remaining blind to those same biases in themselves. Knowing that sunk cost fallacy exists doesn't make you immune when it's your project on the line. The uncomfortable truth: the goal isn't becoming unbiased — it's building systems and processes that catch biases before they damage decisions.
