When an ads.txt warning appears, verify the file location, publisher ID, domain version, cache delay, and platform routing before changing ad settings. The warning can feel urgent, but many fixes fail because creators edit the wrong place. The file must usually be available at the root of the monetized domain, not only inside a theme folder, CMS media library, or alternate subdomain. The publisher ID must match the account exactly. The domain version matters too: example.com, www.example.com, and a hosted platform subdomain may not resolve the same way. Check in this order: open the root ads.txt URL in a private browser, confirm it returns plain text, verify the publisher ID, check whether redirects change the domain, confirm the site is the one approved for ads, then wait for platform refresh if the file is correct. If a CDN or hosting cache is active, purge or wait before making more edits. Avoid changing ad units, deleting placements, or moving code before the file itself is verified. Those changes may create new variables while the original warning is simply a crawler delay. The practical rule is to solve the smallest verifiable problem first. If the file is reachable, correct, and still not recognized after the expected refresh window, then the next step is domain routing or platform support, not random ad layout changes.
