Solo developers often compare AI coding tools by monthly price, but the real cost depends on usage limits, context resets, review time, and how often the tool replaces paid work. This checklist turns the price into a practical decision. ## Count the work type Separate bug fixing, test writing, UI copy, documentation, and architecture review. A tool that is excellent for one category may be wasteful for another. Do not average all tasks into one vague “coding help” bucket. ## Track review minutes If a generated patch takes 40 minutes to review and still needs rewriting, the subscription is not saving much. Track the time from request to merged or accepted change, including test repair. ## Watch hidden limits Message caps, model downgrades, context limits, and file upload limits can change the real price. A lower monthly fee may be worse if the best model is unavailable exactly when the hard task starts. ## A simple threshold Keep the tool if it reliably saves more time than it costs at your hourly value and does not increase defect risk. Cancel or downgrade if it mostly creates drafts you do not trust.
