# Short Video Hook Review Sheet A hook review should not ask only whether the opening feels exciting. The useful question is whether the first frame, first sentence, caption, and payoff all point to the same promise. If they do not, viewers may leave even when the video is well edited. This sheet turns hook review into a repeatable checklist. ## 1. Write the hook promise Before judging the edit, write one sentence: “If the viewer keeps watching, they will get X.” If that sentence is vague, the hook is probably vague. Examples: “learn why this title failed,” “see the before/after edit,” “choose between two thumbnail styles.” ## 2. Check first-frame evidence The first frame should support the promise. A talking head can work, but only if expression, text, or visual context gives the viewer a reason to stay. If the promise is visual but the first frame is abstract, the video may need a stronger opening shot. ## 3. Compare caption and spoken line Captions should clarify the promise, not repeat a weak phrase. If the spoken hook says “you need to know this” and the caption says the same thing, neither tells the viewer what they will gain. ## 4. Confirm payoff timing A strong hook fails if the payoff arrives too late. For short videos, the first useful movement, contrast, or evidence should appear early enough that viewers can see progress before deciding to swipe. ## Review table Promise, first frame, first line, caption, first useful evidence, payoff timestamp, mismatch note. The goal is not to make every opening louder. It is to make the promise clearer and easier to verify after the video has retention data.
