A handoff note expiry check prevents stale context from being treated as current work. It is especially useful for support, operations, customer follow-up, release coordination, and incident cleanup. The check has four questions. What fact was last verified? When was it verified? What event would make it stale? What should the next person do before acting? If a note cannot answer those questions, it may still be useful as history, but it should not be used as live instruction. Examples of expiry events include customer reply, deploy completion, legal review, metric threshold, schedule change, or a new owner taking over. The note does not need a long process. A single line such as “valid until the next release cut” can be enough. This habit protects trust. The next person should not have to wonder whether a handoff is a map or an old snapshot. Clear expiry turns a note into a safer relay point.
