Citation hallucination audit is a small verification pass before reusing a generated bibliography, AI summary, or copied reference list. The audit has three layers. Existence: Does the cited item exist with the stated title, author, venue, and year? Match: Does the source actually support the sentence it is attached to? Currency: Is the source still current enough for this claim? A reference can pass existence and fail match. It can also support the claim generally but fail currency when the topic is fast-moving. Practical audit order: 1. Verify titles and URLs first. 2. Open the source and check the relevant passage, not only the abstract or snippet. 3. Mark weak support as background, not evidence. 4. Keep a correction note when a citation is removed or downgraded. 5. Prefer a shorter verified bibliography over a long impressive-looking one. The goal is not perfect scholarship for every note. The goal is to keep false authority from spreading through later summaries.
