A cropped screenshot is often the right first message. It removes private details, keeps the chat readable, and shows the relevant line quickly. The trouble begins when the crop becomes the only record.

Cropping changes the question from "what did the original say?" to "do we trust the person who cropped it?" That is unfair to everyone. The sender may have shared it honestly. The reader may still need the context. A later participant may not know where the image came from. The group needs a way back to the original without exposing more than necessary.

The return path can be small. For an event rule, include the page title and date checked. For a marketplace promise, include the seller handle and message timestamp. For a receipt, include the order ID or last four digits only if that is safe. For a school or building notice, include who can reopen the official message. For a public post, include the link or post ID.

The source trail should also handle updates. A screenshot can show the price at 10 a.m. and be wrong by 3 p.m. If the decision depends on a changing page, the record should say when to check again. A static image is not enough when the original can change.

This does not mean every casual image needs a formal citation. A meme, a menu idea, or a quick visual reference can stay lightweight. The stronger rule belongs to claims that create obligation: pay this amount, arrive at this time, use this entrance, follow this policy, trust this seller, or accept this refund condition.

A cropped image is useful when it starts the conversation. It becomes risky when it ends the verification. The fix is not to ban screenshots. The fix is to leave one safe path back to the source.
