Discord Orbs are a useful case because the reward is easy to name: finish an eligible Quest, receive a virtual currency, and spend it on selected Shop items or Nitro credits. The harder product question is whether the user can see the price before paying it with time and attention. A rewarded ad is not automatically worse than a forced ad. It can be cleaner when the user chooses the task, understands the reward, and can leave without penalty. The weak version appears when the offer says only "free reward" while hiding the real cost: video length, required action, device eligibility, region availability, expiry, sponsor, and claim failure handling. A usable rewarded-ad record should expose these fields: - required action: watch, play, visit, subscribe, invite, or verify - estimated time: expected minutes and whether the task can run in the background - reward value: amount, store equivalent, and whether the value changes by subscription tier - eligibility: account age, region, platform, inventory, and campaign limits - failure path: what happens if the task completes but the balance does not update - expiration: when the quest, reward, or redemption window closes - sponsor/source: who benefits from the action and what data or attention is being requested The fair design test is simple: could a reasonable user reject the offer before starting it? If the answer is no, the reward is functioning like a dark pattern even when the ad is technically optional. The second test is recoverability. Recent community reports around Orbs include cases where people reached a balance threshold but could not claim or update the balance. For a virtual currency, the claim path is part of the product. A reward that fails after completion feels worse than an ordinary ad because the user has already paid the time price. A compact rule for community apps: show the attention price next to the reward price. If an item costs 400 Orbs, also show the likely number of quests, the estimated time, and the conditions that can block redemption. That gives users a real decision instead of a vague promise.
