A comment can name a product without becoming a product page. That sounds obvious until a platform starts adding its own layer around the words people wrote. Reddit's June 2026 changelog is a useful current example. Reddit says some users will see popular product names highlighted in conversations. Tapping a highlight opens a product deep dive with an AI-powered summary of Reddit conversations and direct quotes. If a business has supplied catalog data, that deep dive may also show images, pricing, and buying links. That can be useful. A reader who finds three confusing headphone threads may want a compact place to compare what people actually said. A skincare community may have repeated questions where a product deep dive saves time. Search can become less like scrolling through ten old threads and more like opening a sourced starting point. The problem is authorship. The person who wrote the original comment did not necessarily add the product path, choose the shopping destination, or intend to make the comment function as a buying surface. A moderator also may have rules that treat product links differently from ordinary text. If the platform adds a highlighted layer after the fact, the community needs to see whether the new path belongs to the author, the platform, or a merchant catalog. This is why the boundary matters more than the feature name. There are at least three layers on the page. First is authored text: what the redditor typed. Second is platform context: highlight, summary, quote extraction, search result, or preview. Third is commercial destination: price, retailer, buying path, affiliate-like routing, or business profile catalog. If those layers blur together, a normal comment can look like an endorsement, a spam rule can become ambiguous, and a reader may not know which part can be challenged. A workable design needs a visible difference. A platform-added product highlight should not look like a link the author inserted. It needs its own icon, label, or hover text. It also needs a plain explanation near the first use: this was added by the platform, not by the commenter. Moderators need a different test. If a community bans product links, does a platform-generated product highlight count as a link? If not, can the rule still prevent commercial drift? If yes, can a rule-following comment be filtered because the platform added context later? Reddit's r/help thread surfaced exactly this kind of worry: the visual distinction, Automod behavior, sensitive communities, and whether a platform layer creates extra moderation work. Readers need a source trail. A product deep dive that summarizes conversations should show which comments or posts shaped the answer, how old they are, and whether the quoted discussion came from communities where product advice is allowed. Without that, a summary can flatten disagreement into a single shopping suggestion. Brands need limits too. Catalog data can be helpful when a reader is already comparing products. It becomes intrusive when it appears to convert ordinary user discussion into a sales path. The line is not simply whether money is involved. The line is whether the reader can tell when they left community speech and entered product discovery. My rule is simple: platform-added context should be treated like a separate layer, not like part of the comment. That means five checks belong in any product-highlight rollout: 1. The user can visually distinguish author-added links from platform-added highlights. 2. The moderator can decide whether the layer appears in that community. 3. The rules engine can tell the difference between authored links and platform context. 4. The deep dive keeps a clear source trail and freshness window. 5. The author is not blamed for a commercial path they did not add. This is not a rejection of product search. It is a boundary for making product search usable inside communities that already have norms. If a platform wants to help readers research products, it should make the extra layer legible. The cleaner the boundary, the less every product mention starts to feel like hidden advertising. ## Update: make the inserted layer inspectable The first version of this record focused on the visible boundary between author text and platform-added product context. After reading the moderator questions around the June 2026 Reddit changelog, I would add one more requirement: the inserted layer has to be inspectable by the systems that enforce community rules. A visual underline is helpful for readers, but it is not enough for moderators. A community needs to know whether the highlighted product mention is stored as authored text, a platform annotation, a shopping entry point, or a search result. Those are different moderation objects. If the moderation queue and rule engine cannot see the distinction, a platform can say "this is not a link" while users still experience it as the next click after a product mention. A practical test is: can a moderator remove or report the inserted layer without deleting the original comment? If the answer is no, then the platform has made the user's speech carry a feature the user did not control. For a cleaner rollout, product highlights should expose at least four fields to moderators and clients: added_by, destination_type, source_posts, and remove_or_report_action. That does not make the feature heavy. It makes the responsibility line visible when the feature is wrong.
