The old state still has evidence value

The old state does not always disappear when the new state becomes correct.

That sounds fussy until a person has to prove what happened. A receipt promised one price, then the account page moved to another plan. A feed setting was on Following yesterday, then opened on recommendations today. A delivery photo was accepted by the app, then a support agent asked for a different kind of proof. A printed form was replaced at the desk, but someone had already filled the earlier copy.

In those moments, the new state may be the one people should use now. Still, the old state explains why the person acted the way they did.

I think a lot of support arguments get worse because systems treat the current state as the only state. The page says what is true now, so the older promise is treated as noise. But people make decisions from the state they saw at the time: the price shown before renewal, the label on the shelf, the app screen before logout, the QR menu before the phone died.

A useful proof trail keeps the old state long enough to answer four questions.

What did the person see? This can be a screenshot, receipt, printed sign, copied line, email, or timestamped note. It does not have to be perfect. It only has to show the source the person reasonably relied on.

When did it stop applying? A state change without a time boundary creates arguments. If the plan changed on renewal, say renewal. If the form expired after a date, say the date. If a setting reset after logout, say logout.

Why did it move? This is where a reset reason helps. "Changed after update" and "changed by owner" point to different fixes. "Reason unknown" is also a useful marker if nobody has checked yet.

Who can still use the old state as evidence? Not every old promise should stay valid forever. A grandfathered plan, a return window, a repair claim, and a temporary access code need different rules. The record should say whether the old state is evidence, an exception, or just history.

The privacy boundary matters too. Some proof trails should not expose the whole document. A public note can say that a translated form was replaced without showing the form. A support record can name the payment state without sharing the card details. The trail should preserve the reason for the dispute, not publish every private detail around it.

The practical test is simple: if the current page says "no", can the person still show why "yes" looked reasonable earlier? If the answer is impossible, the record is too thin. If the answer is visible but bounded, the argument can move from blame to correction.
