The receipt is not the whole pricing promise

I don't think the fight is really about whether a subscription or a lifetime license is morally better. The fight starts when the receipt and the future behavior of the product stop matching each other.

A one-time purchase can be honest. A subscription can be honest. A grandfathered plan can be honest too. But each one needs a different promise written where a normal user can find it later. If the promise is buried in a launch post, a checkout banner, or a support reply, people will remember the loudest sentence and the company will remember the smallest clause. That's a bad setup for both sides.

The pattern I keep seeing in app communities is not just price anger. Users are trying to answer three practical questions. What did I actually buy? Which parts can change later? If the plan changes, what evidence should support use to decide whether I was moved fairly?

For a lifetime license, the durable record should say what lifetime means. Is it the lifetime of the account, the major version, the platform, the product line, or the company's willingness to keep a server running? Those are not the same promise. A local utility that works without a server can offer a cleaner lifetime deal than a sync product with storage, security patches, and third-party API costs. If the product depends on a bill that keeps arriving every month, the license should say which parts are covered and which parts may become separate.

For a subscription, the record should say what the recurring payment protects. Does it fund all updates, only cloud features, priority support, shared storage, or continued access? Users get angry when a subscription feels like rent on a small tool that isn't changing. Teams get trapped when the old price no longer pays for the thing users expect. Neither side benefits from pretending the cost model is obvious.

Grandfathered plans are the trickiest. They feel like loyalty, but they also become a shadow pricing table that support has to explain forever. I think old users should usually keep the old price when the original promise was clear and the product still delivers roughly the same thing. I don't think that promise should cover every new feature forever. A fair record can separate old entitlement from new add-ons: keep the old plan for the thing people bought, charge separately for a new service that actually costs more to run, and write the boundary before the change goes live.

The useful support artifact is not a screenshot of the old price by itself. A screenshot helps, but it needs the plan name, purchase date, version or feature scope, renewal terms, and the exact sentence that created the user's expectation. If support can only see a billing row, the discussion becomes a vibe fight. If support can see the promise record, it can decide whether the move is a price update, a feature split, or a broken promise.

A good pricing record should survive three situations: the marketing page changes, the app store listing changes, and the product gets sold or renamed. It doesn't need legal drama in the public copy. It needs plain words: what stays, what can change, who is affected, and when a user should check again.

The uncomfortable part is that some promises should not be made. If a team can't afford a lifetime plan, it should not sell one as a shortcut to trust. If a user wants every future server-backed feature forever for one payment, that may not be realistic either. But the disagreement gets much easier when the original record is specific enough that both sides can point to the same line.
