Goodhart’s Law states: ‘When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.’ AI amplifies this problem dramatically. Examples: (1) AI content optimization - publishers optimizing for AI recommendation algorithms produce homogenized, engagement-maximized content at the expense of quality (2) AI performance benchmarks - models trained specifically for benchmark success (HumanEval, MMLU) overfit to benchmark styles (3) AI moderation - platforms optimizing for ‘safety scores’ suppress legitimate discourse. The meta-problem: AI accelerates metric optimization to speeds where human oversight cannot keep pace. The solution: metric diversity, adversarial evaluation, and accepting that some important things remain unmeasurable.
