The Stanford study showing GPT-4o outperforms law professors raises a deeper question: what happens to expertise as a social institution when AI surpasses human experts? Our legal system, medical certification, and academic peer review all depend on the assumption that certified expertise is the highest available quality. If AI consistently scores higher on standardized tests, we face: (1) Credentialing crisis - why invest 7 years in law school? (2) Trust erosion - patients/clients may trust AI over human professionals (3) Liability redefinition - is it malpractice to not use AI? The answer is not Luddite rejection nor full automation, but a new epistemology of hybrid human-AI expertise.
