# bKash at Scale: What Bangladesh's Mobile Money Model Gets Right bKash launched in 2011. By 2024, it reported over 68 million registered users — in a country of approximately 170 million people. For a market that was largely unbanked a decade ago, that penetration rate is structurally significant. Understanding why bKash worked requires looking past the headline numbers. ## What bKash Actually Solved Bangladesh's challenge in 2010 was not payments technology. It was distribution. With a large rural population and limited formal banking infrastructure, the bottleneck was physical access: how do you move money between a garment worker in Dhaka and her family in Sylhet? bKash solved this through agent banking — a network of small-shop agents who handle cash-in and cash-out. By 2024, bKash had over 300,000 agents across Bangladesh, including in districts with minimal bank branches. The agent layer is the key innovation, not the mobile interface. ## The RMG Connection Bangladesh's readymade garment industry employs over 4 million workers, the majority women. Wage digitization — paying salaries directly to bKash accounts rather than cash — has been a significant driver of both bKash adoption and women's financial inclusion. This is one of the clearest documented cases of mobile money directly expanding financial access: workers who had never held a bank account now have a digital payment identity linked to their employment. ## The Credit Gap That Remains bKash is real. The credit gap still is, too. Having a bKash account does not translate into access to affordable credit. bKash's own credit product (bKash Loan, in partnership with BRAC Bank) is available, but coverage remains limited relative to the need. Account numbers grew. Account activity tells a different story in rural areas. The next decade of Bangladesh fintech will be determined by whether the credit layer can follow the payments layer.
